Helpful Tips

We would like to recommend several pointers to help you establish and maintain a successful ridesharing experience.

Before joining an existing pool or welcoming new riders into yours, make sure the other commuters live and work close to you and travel similar hours on the same days.

Meet with your fellow commuters before your first trip. Discuss safety concerns and exchange phone numbers, photographs, emergency contact information, driver’s license numbers, proof of insurance and medical information.

Discuss the basics.

  • Set up the roles and responsibilities. Will you take turns driving? Will one person drive and the others pay? When will payments be due?
  • Determine the pick-up location. Will it be your home, the mall, a nearby grocery store or some other convenient spot?
  • Establish a firm schedule and make rules about riders who run late. Will you wait as long as five minutes, or leave without them after only three?
  • Agree on eating, smoking and radio listening rules.
  • Decide if unscheduled stops will be permitted.
  • Clarify your backup plans. Who will drive if an illness, emergency or vacation causes your driver’s absence? How early should the driver give notice? How early should riders give notice concerning absences to the driver? What will you do if someone must go in early or stay late?

Drivers should commit to keep their cars or vans well maintained and full of gas, be prompt and avoid running errands with their riders on board.

Riders should respect the drivers’ rules and treat their vehicles with the utmost care.
